Easter in Ukraine
By Lori
Hadacek, B.F.A.
Here's
a story about Easter from the Catholic community in Ukraine, which is
just south of Russia:
While Christ was
dying on the cross for our sins, drops of blood from His wounds fell
to the ground. Each of the droplets of His precious blood turned into
a crimson Easter egg. Christ's mother, who stood at the foot of the
cross, shed many tears for her dear Son. Her sorrowful tears fell upon
the Easter eggs, causing beautiful designs to form. After the Jesus
took His last breath, the Blessed Mother gathered all of the eggs up
in her blue mantle and set out to ask Pontius Pilate for permission
to bury her Son. On the way she handed the precious Easter eggs out
to children she encountered as keepsakes of Christ's love. When she
arrived at her destination she fainted and the rest of the eggs spilled
out of her mantle to children all around the world, thus beginning the
tradition of decorating eggs for Easter.
Print out and
color a Ukrainian Easter Egg or design your own using some of the Ukrainian

Decorate some
Easter eggs, and choose your very best as a gift to the Blessed Virgin
in Celebration of Our Risen Savior. Bring one with you to church for
Easter Mass, and bring it to Mary's statue. Present it to her and say
a decade of the Rosary, then bring it home and give it to some member
of your family to eat!
