SAINT NICHOLAS CELEBRATION IDEAS

Nicholas was bishop of the city of Myra, in what now is the country of Turkey. He was known for his charity. He welcomed homeless people to live in his home. Once he even turned his home into a hospital. Nicholas is called a "wonder-worker" because he performed many miracles. His greatest miracle was the example of his own life. Many people saw the good things Nicholas did and were inspired to do good things, too. On St. Nicholas's Day, December 6, the bishop's fans rush to follow his wonderful example of giving gifts to people in secret.

  • In certain countries Children will write letters to Saint Nicholas, they will learn songs and poems at school and they will see him at school, at the toy department in supermarkets and even at home.
  • One custom is for people to leave out their shoes or to hang stockings on the night before St. Nicholas's Day. These are filled-by you or by anyone in the house-in imitation of the saint. Popular fillers are small tangerines, nuts, gold foil-wrapped chocolates and, especially, gingerbread cookies. These can be tokens of love, beautifully shaped and iced, perhaps wrapped in tissue, and set besides each shoe or handed out at school.
